Plagiarism Detection and Good Practices in Promoting Academic Honesty in Higher Education

Abstract

To uphold academic integrity and ensure the quality of higher education, the proper use of technology and effective teaching and learning methods are essential elements. This study aimed to present the roles of students, faculty, and administrators in preventing plagiarism and discussed good practices and technology used to promote academic honesty. The study included a comparison of individual and group papers using SafeAssign to calculate the percentage of copied content. Data were collected using an experimental study including 519 papers from graduate students in the School of Industrial Sciences & Technology between 2017-2023. The SPSS and T-Test were utilized to test significant differences among variables at alpha 0.05. 

The study's results indicate a significant difference in matching percentages between individual and group research papers, but not between delivery modes (online vs in-person) or semesters. A Cause-and-effect diagram was created to present the findings of this study, together with free services of applications and websites for writing scholarly content and detecting plagiarism. Future studies on plagiarism detection and prevention could explore how cultural differences and language barriers impact students' perceptions of plagiarism and academic honesty. Researching effective methods for teaching students about plagiarism and proper citation practices, as well as understanding students' attitudes and backgrounds, would be beneficial for addressing academic integrity.
