Copying and Product Development: Definitions and Practices by Fashion Industry Personnel

Abstract

The results of copying are clearly visible as consumers adopt the apparel style of others through a cyclic consumption process. Copying may be a simple as drag and click; however, copying may have legal and financial ramifications. This study examines fashion industry practices about copying through in-depth interviews using various social media and survey technology. Fashion industry practitioners were interviewed. Definitions and practices are delineated in the study. Findings have implications for both fashion industry personnel as well as educators.
