The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive classification system that clarifies, integrates, and logically organizes the wide array of apparel evaluative criteria found in literature. Based on systematic review and analysis of the extant research on apparel evaluative criteria and following Hunt’s (2010) procedural steps for developing classification schemes, Fashion Product Evaluation (FPE) framework was developed. The framework integrates evaluative criteria into four mutually exclusive and clearly defined dimensions: Intrinsic, Marketing, Functional, and Social-Communicative. Law-like propositions were developed to define each dimension and guide the classification of evaluative criteria. This classification system can serve as a framework for new product development and holistic understanding of how consumers evaluate apparel products. The FPE framework clarifies the use of evaluative criteria and makes the concept more useful and applicable.
