Many forces are impacting the academic landscape such as increasing competition, the inability of American families to pay for college, and the growth of for-profit universities. Accountability to external stakeholders also remains at the forefront of this discourse. Through the lens of upper administration, this paper presents an overview of the changing textile and apparel industries,discusses demographic shifts in higher education, highlights the challenges of inertia of change and provides a checklist for textile and apparel programs to future proof their discipline at their respective institutions.
