Abstract

This study explores inclusive sportswear design strategies tailored to the physical, sensory, and behavioral characteristics of children with developmental disabilities. Although regular physical activity supports health, motor skills, and social participation, existing sportswear often fails to meet the specific needs of this population, leading to discomfort and reduced engagement. Focusing on four disability types—Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and Intellectual Disability (ID)—this research employs qualitative content analysis of academic literature and industry design cases related to adaptive and sensory-friendly apparel. Key challenges associated with each disability type were identified and translated into four core design strategy areas: reducing sensory overload, enhancing sustained attention, improving tactile comfort, and promoting motor skill development. The findings propose targeted sportswear design strategies that support comfort, mobility, and active participation, contributing practical guidelines to inclusive sportswear design.
