Integrating Advanced Technologies in Ergonomic Clothing Design: A Participatory Approach with Older Adults in Undergraduate Education

Abstract

This study integrates ergonomic and participatory design approaches into undergraduate clothing design education by directly engaging older adults as co-designers. Addressing the limitations of traditional designer-led methods and standardized dress forms, the course emphasized body diversity and realistic user needs. Students conducted user needs assessments, developed preliminary ideas, and refined concepts through collaborative feedback. Advanced tools—including 3D body scanning, digital modeling, and half-scale body form making—enabled students to visualize and accommodate unique anatomical features. Through prototyping and fitting sessions, students gained practical experience translating ergonomic principles into functional garments for real wearers. The project culminated in a community fashion show, where older adults modeled the final designs. Students reported enhanced understanding of user-centered design, greater awareness of diverse body shapes, and increased confidence in applying 3D technologies. This pedagogical model illustrates a practical and immersive approach to teaching ergonomic clothing design.
