Abstract

The global fashion industry increasingly integrates 3D CAD patternmaking software (e.g., CLO3D, Optitex, VStitcher) into product development and education. These tools combine 2D pattern drafting with 3D garment visualization, improving efficiency but presenting steep learning curves due to the required knowledge of patternmaking, spatial cognition, and 2D-3D orientation skills. Unlike intuitive traditional tools, 3D CAD demands extra training. To address these challenges, this conceptual framework proposes using Virtual Reality (VR) for instructional modules. VR’s immersive environment and handheld controllers can enhance motor skill transfer and bridge gaps between physical and digital tool use. The framework applies ill-structured (design decisions) and well-structured (tool execution) problem-solving models (Jonassen, 1997), enabling constructivist learning and step-by-step guidance. While tailored for apparel design education, this VR-based approach can extend to other fields like architecture and engineering.
