Abstract

Undergraduate apparel students are required to plan and execute a variety of fashion photoshoots in several courses. Students were previously given autonomy for research and selection of their own poses for photoshoots, without model training occurring in past classes. The main objective of this innovative teaching method was to focus on improving students’ skill-specific techniques by implementing purposeful model training into a fashion styling class for a photoshoot. A secondary goal was to emphasize specific transferable skills to assist students in overcoming potential personal challenges for modeling. This strategy was tested two years in a row, with improvements made in the second year including the addition of more challenging techniques. Students’ growth trajectory for modeling and transferable skills was observable with notable increases in self-awareness, level of confidence, and more by the instructor and both student groups. Implications are applicable for a variety of fashion industry endeavors and related disciplines.
