SCAURA
Abstract
SCAURA is a design project that investigates circular material innovation through the development of a functional satchel constructed from a nonwoven, leather-like textile made using traditional papermaking techniques. The project explores how discarded textile waste can be transformed into durable accessory materials through low-tech, craft-based processes. Pre and post-consumer textile waste was reclaimed, sorted, shredded, pulped, and formed into sheets, then treated with a plant-based stiffening agent to further enhance flexibility, strength, and water resistance. The resulting material was then cut and assembled using leatherworking methods, including reinforced seams, handstitching, and functional hardware. Aesthetically, SCAURA embraces rawness, irregularity, and visible construction, challenging conventional notions of polish and perfection in fashion accessories. By elevating imperfection and material authenticity, the project reframes waste as a valuable design resource. SCAURA contributes to sustainable fashion discourse by demonstrating an accessible, adaptable approach to circular material development while expanding the designer's practice into accessory design.
