Abstract

This study explored menstrual management needs for intellectual and developmental disabilities (IIDDs) and their caregivers, focusing on physical and psychological challenges associated with assisting in menstrual hygiene. Applying the models of clothing comfort and human activity assistive technology, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. Thematic analysis revealed the need for adaptive period underwear that improves ease of use, hygiene, and caregiver support, as IIDDs and their caregivers face physical and emotional challenges in managing menstrual hygiene due to difficulty in pad changes, lack of change reminders, odor concerns, and lack of absorption capacity. The design improvements (e.g., adjustable openings for easy changing, real-time liquid alert systems for timely pad changes, antibacterial materials for enhanced hygiene) could enhance its usability and reduce caregivers’ burden. This study provides the awareness of menstrual hygiene challenges faced by them, leading researchers developing adaptive solutions that prioritize dignity, ease of use, and holistic caregiver support.
