Culturally Responsive Maternity Apparel for Saudi Mothers: A User-Centered Design Approach
Abstract
The global expansion of the maternity apparel market underscores the growing need for functional and culturally responsive designs. Despite advancements in adaptive clothing, many nursing garments fail to meet the cultural expectations or everyday challenges of Saudi mothers. This study explores the apparel needs and preferences of breastfeeding Saudi mothers and applies a User-Centered Design framework to develop adaptive garments that support modesty, comfort, and confidence. Semi-structured interviews with ten mothers aged 20–40 provided insights into their breastfeeding routines and clothing limitations. Thematic analysis revealed three key design priorities: functional accessibility, aesthetic appeal, and cultural expression. These findings informed an iterative co-design process in which initial sketches were refined into CAD designs and evaluated by participants. The results highlight the importance of culturally informed design in creating maternity apparel that enhances comfort, modesty, and breastfeeding confidence.
