Feasibility of Industrial Production using the Carrico Zero-Waste Banded Grading Technique
Abstract
This project investigated the feasibility of creating gradable, zero-waste (ZW) apparel using industrial production methods. To increase the reach of this project, we sought to produce a garment in high demand and easy to construct. Scrubs were ideal, as the global market for scrubs is expected to grow. Additionally, the styling of scrubs remains fairly consistent, enabling a greater return on investment in ZW pattern development. Results indicate that the factory had no difficulties cutting the ZW marker and sewing the scrub set. However, the organization required for the bands was a drawback, as pieces had to be laid out on a table rather than stacked and sewn at the machine in a more typical assembly process. While the factory owner felt the ZW concept was generally good, they felt other firms would not be quick to adopt it due to the numerous parts and the assembly time required.
