“It Felt Like a Hug”: The Wear Testing of a Weighted Champion Hoodie to AssessComfortability, Fit, and Mobility
Abstract
This study explores the everyday usability of a weighted Champion hoodie, examining its comfort, fit, mobility, and emotional impact through the lenses of User-Centered Design (UCD) and the Functional, Expressive, and Aesthetic (FEA) model. Twenty-two participants (ages 18–30) wear-tested hoodies featuring microbead-weighted panels and sensory-friendly features. Thematic analysis of digital diaries and interviews revealed mixed feedback: while many found the hoodie calming and emotionally supportive—likening it to a "hug"—others reported discomfort from bulkiness and limited mobility. Design concerns centered on sleeve fit, breathability, and weight distribution. Despite drawbacks, users appreciated its aesthetic appeal and emotional grounding, especially among individuals with sensory sensitivities. Findings underscore the potential of weighted apparel beyond clinical settings and highlight the need for inclusive, user-informed design improvements in adaptive fashion.
