Abstract

This capstone fashion design project addresses the challenges faced by ostomy bag users through innovative garment construction that balances functionality with avant-garde aesthetics. The design features an expanding yoke system using accordion pleats that allows for up to 3⅓ inches of ease at hip level to accommodate ostomy bags as they fill, while maintaining a secure waistline through strategic use of stretch knit binding. By eliminating traditional stiff waistbands and incorporating bellows pocket principles, the garment provides comfort and support without compromising on bold visual expression. The ensemble combines a distressed red wool top with deconstructed three-part pants constructed from stretch sateen and knit fabrics, creating a theatrical, experimental silhouette with mixed textures and exaggerated proportions. This user-centered design demonstrates how empathetic problem-solving and technical innovation can integrate seamlessly with creative fashion design, offering ostomy users dignified, comfortable clothing that meets their specific needs while maintaining strong aesthetic impact.

Keywords: ostomy bag, adaptable clothing, pleating
