Advancing Students’ Generative AI Literacy: A Fashion Merchandising Toolkit and Teaching Guide
Abstract
Generative AI (GenAI) literacy is rapidly emerging as an essential workplace competency; however, fashion educators face challenges in understanding how to pedagogically integrate GenAI, and practical implementation in classrooms remains limited. This teaching project presents an innovative, ready-to-use digital support toolkit, #AIforfashionedu, designed to scaffold GenAI adoption in fashion merchandising education. Guided by the IDEO Design Thinking Process and Revisited Bloom’s Taxonomy, the toolkit comprises five modules and seven interactive activities. The toolkit is currently implemented in two undergraduate fashion merchandising courses: (a) Fashion Branding and Promotion and (b) Consumer Data Analytics. Teaching evaluation data were collected from course materials, student feedback, and reflections. The results show that students recognized distinctions between GenAI and human capabilities; they also found GenAI useful for deepening subject knowledge and reported enhanced GenAI literacy in creativity and critical thinking. The toolkit contributes to a potentially pedagogical model for GenAI-enabled learning in fashion merchandising.
