Abstract

A 2024 survey of academic researchers found 76% reported using AI, however, only 27% reported possessing a good understanding of AI generally (Oxford University Press, 2024). Student use of AI was over double that of the faculty (Shaw et al., 2023). Textiles and Apparel Educators should proactively incorporate AI into our curriculum. Course support chatbots are popular. Instructors can code their own chatbot or use a hosting sources like Chatling.ai. Applications like OpenArt.ai, Resleeve.ai, Patterned.ai and Adobe Firefly can automate labor intensive creative tasks like generating accurate technical garment flats, creating photo simulations of garments, generating fashion sketches and textile surface designs from prompts. With HyperWriteai.com, students can adapt forecasting trends and change predictions in real time. Fabric waste can be dramatically reduced by linking AI software cutting tables and asking for layout variations producing less waste. Integrating AI technology into courses now will prepare students for the future workplace.
