The Meaning of Greenhouse Gas Emission (GHG) in My Clothing: Does Awareness of a Clothing’s Carbon Footprint Encourage Sustainable Behaviors?
Abstract
The novelty of our study is that it uses an integrated methodological framework across the set of footprint indicators to evaluate clothing environmental performance based on a database with a higher level of environmental detail. By investigating whether transparency in carbon emissions drives meaningful behavioral change, this research contributes to discussions on the effectiveness of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures. The findings pointed out that awareness of the carbon footprint of clothing throughout its life cycle can influence sustainable behaviors. Driven by the understanding of their chosen clothing’s carbon footprint, students can make informed decisions that prioritize sustainability. Awareness of carbon emissions associated with production, transportation, and disposal encourages them to reduce overconsumption, opt for durable and eco-friendly fabrics, and adopt better garment care practices. Ultimately, education about the carbon footprint of clothing can lead to more conscious purchasing habits, contributing to the reduction of fashion's overall environmental impact.
