Abstract

Size labeling is a key indicator that consumers use in selecting garments for purchase. Different size charts across brands in a similar product category can confuse consumers when choosing a size. To understand the magnitude of differences in size charts, we investigated a single apparel product category with straightforward styling: healthcare scrubs. Scrubs were selected due to the projected growth in healthcare and the subsequent forecasted growth of the global scrubs market from $86.5 billion in 2022 to $134.4 billion by 2030. We concluded that a standardized size chart for scrubs was needed to reduce consumer confusion about which size to buy. The measurements and grades of our proposed size chart were based on the median and the mode, similar for most measurements. We used a uniform grade that allows the grader to maintain consistent pattern shapes across multiple sizes.
