1920s Fashion: History and Design
Abstract
Through this Discovery Learning course, students conducted material culture research applied to historic fashion artifacts. Students built digital-design skills, essential in the fashion design field, through an applied project with digital and physical outcomes contributing to their portfolios, and to a future museum exhibition. They developed an understanding of how the1920s zeitgeist influenced women's fashions through cultural, aesthetic, social, political and historical viewpoints. CLO3D software was use to draft patterns based on measurements from historic garments. Pattern accuracy was tested. Replica half-scale garments were constructed using digitally printed fashion fabric. Beading, lace, embroidery, prints from individual dresses were developed digitally and printed on fabrics of similar weight and weave to that of the original garments with the goal of achieving the aesthetic essence of the original. Replica garments will be displayed in a companion exhibition to help visualize garments too fragile to display on a form.
