Designing Apparel for Post Caesarean Recovery Emphasizing Comfort and Wellbeing
Abstract
Post-caesarean women experience physical and emotional challenges that are often unmet by commercially available maternity wear. Issues such as incision sensitivity, limited mobility, apron belly, and discomfort from restrictive garments highlight the need for improved recovery apparel. This study aimed to develop user-centered undergarments designed to meet the functional and emotional needs of women recovering from caesarean deliveries. Using a qualitative approach guided by the User-Centered Design framework, six Saudi women participated in semi-structured interviews exploring postoperative challenges. Insights from these interviews informed the creation of initial hand-drawn sketches, which were refined in the second phase and transformed into detailed CAD designs. In the third phase, participants evaluated the CAD designs, and the highest-rated garment was produced as the final prototype. Findings emphasize the importance of soft materials, integrated abdominal support, and breastfeeding access. This study demonstrates the value of participatory design in advancing inclusive, supportive postnatal apparel solutions.
