Burnout
Abstract
Burnout was created to bring awareness to the severe stress that students struggle with in Japanese schools. Students face high societal expectations to succeed as they prepare for intense school entrance exams and their future careers. While at school, students experience strict classroom rules, restricting dress codes, and bullying. As a result, many students deal with poor mental health and academic burnout. Some students even resort to suicide. This garment portrays the mental anguish and frustration of being a student in Japan. It is made up of multiple pieces of fabric that resemble crumpled paper with painted Japanese characters. The meaning of each character is a certain grade on the Japanese academic grading scale. The sleeves of the dress are made to look like upside-down candles which are symbolic of burnout. The dress also incorporates elements of a kimono, a traditional Japanese dress.
