Gradable Zero-waste: All Dressed Up
Abstract
This design investigates the efficacy of the Carrico Zero-waste Banded Grading (CZWBG) technique (Carrico, 2020) in addressing the scalability challenges of zero-waste apparel for mass production. Traditional zero-waste patterns often lack scalability due to single-size designs, off-grain patterns, and boxy fits, limiting mass market appeal (McKinney et al., 2020; Stannard, 2022). The CZWBG technique minimizes textile waste by maintaining a consistent zero-waste pattern layout across sizes, reducing costs at the cutting stage. It uses strategically placed bands to grade sizes, offering a scalable and aesthetically appealing solution. Three prototypes were constructed in varying fabrics to showcase versatility. Contrasting bands and diagonal and vertical lines accentuate the feminine figure across sizes. Colors and fabrics enhance the garment’s appeal—pink for youthfulness, brown silk for elegance, and blue cotton for casual wear. The process integrated pattern drafting, draping, and zero-waste layout optimization. Ready-to-wear techniques were employed for durability and efficiency.
