Abstract

For breast cancer patients, who often face challenges related to body image and self-concept due to mastectomy and chemotherapy, fashion plays a crucial role. It serves not only as a means of self-expression but also as a form of therapy and empowerment. This study explores the resilience process of breast cancer patients within the context of fashion, a key element in their daily lives. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved in-depth interviews with 12 participants. Analysis of the data revealed five themes based on the communication theory of resilience: Crafting Normalcy, Affirming Identity Anchor, Maintaining and Using Communication Networks, Putting Alternative Logics to Work, and Foregrounding Productive Action. This study provides valuable insights for healthcare practitioners, psychologists, and support communities working with individuals undergoing post-surgical experiences, particularly those related to breast cancer.

Keywords: Breast cancer, fashion, communication theory of resilience, self-concept, qualitative
