Abstract

This project repurposes a culturally significant Buldan tablecloth into a modern, caftan-inspired decorative jacket, merging traditional craftsmanship with sustainability. The caftan, a timeless garment rooted in Turkish and Ottoman history, symbolizes ceremonial importance and cultural heritage. Buldan fabric, a 100% cotton plain weave known for its durability and unique texture, is the foundation for this design. The tablecloth, sourced from a dowry, features intricate floral embroidery created by local craftspeople. The embroidery’s dark purple thread contrasts elegantly with the light beige fabric, providing texture and depth. Using a T-cut pattern, the caftan design incorporates two rectangular body pieces and a gold-lined capstone fabric to enhance the structure and visual impact.

This project celebrates the caftan’s historical significance while promoting sustainability by upcycling traditional textiles. By blending heritage and contemporary fashion, the design honors Buldan fabric’s cultural identity and showcases its versatility, preserving its legacy for future generations.
