Abstract

"Coming Out" is an abstract garment that represents identity theories. The idea behind the dress is that from top to bottom it conveys a message to the viewers about the internal struggle of hardship during the process of coming out. As it started at the bottom, there are four panels that are asymmetrical representing denial, confusion, acceptance, and pride. The dress is black as a way to display the dark thoughts keeping everything muted, letting the colorful heart stand out. Around the hop area is the denial and confusion stage, with the use of ropes wrapping around the design. This symbolizes the internal thoughts and battles that an individual faces during the coming out process. The top area represents the acceptance and pride stage, the flap portrays the saying "Coming out of the closet," as one opens the flap, a rainbow embroidery heart is shown to show the pride being released.
