Design as Data: Developing an Approach to Design Research Data Analysis through Zero-Waste Design
Abstract
This research proposes a novel approach to data analysis in design scholarship, addressing a methodological gap in design research. This investigation introduces the Design as Data (DaD) method, integrating problem-based and research through practice frameworks for a comprehensive analysis of Zero-Waste (ZW) design challenges. By examining three experimental designs, this study identifies and categorizes inherent issues in ZW apparel and textile (AT) design, such as construction complexities and limitations in contoured styles. The proposed DaD method extends current design research practices by contributing an eight-step data analysis process that facilitates the examination and categorization of design processes by reducing the data into analyzable components that result in actionable insights. This method enhances the iterative design process and contributes to the development of not only a method for ZW AT design but also augments existing design research practices with a robust analytical framework.
