Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has introduced a paradigm shift across various design disciplines. In the realm of fashion design, Generative AI facilitates rapid production of virtual clothing prototypes. Designers can input specific parameters—such as style preferences, color schemes, and fabric choices—and the AI generates design choices that adhere to these stipulations. Incorporating Generative AI into the curriculum facilitates a comprehensive educational experience that mirrors the evolving landscape of the fashion industry. Although there can be various instances along the curriculum where AI can be introduced, the efficacy can be maximized if the students learn to use the tool during design portfolio development. This pedagogy was implemented in a senior level class of apparel design program. The output of these projects is a digitally-oriented portfolio that showcases a range of design modules, from initial concepts, mood boards all the way to finalized products, created using Generative AI software.
