Abstract

UltraAdapt is a modular adaptive footwear solution designed to address the unmet needs of individuals with paralysis who use ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). This research-based design project integrates insights from interviews with 20 participants, including individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, emphasizing the importance of functionality, comfort, and aesthetics in adaptive footwear. UltraAdapt features interchangeable uppers, accommodating diverse styles such as mules, low-top sneakers, and high-top sneakers. Utilizing advanced technologies like 3D scanning and 3D printing, the design ensures a deep footbed, adjustable closures, and enhanced durability at AFO connections. Materials, including leather and canvas, blend functionality with contemporary fashion aesthetics, offering customizable and visually appealing options. By addressing accessibility and personalization, this study contributes to design scholarship, advances adaptive footwear solutions, and fosters social inclusion. The findings also serve as a case study for teaching inclusive design principles to future designers and researchers.
