A Focus on Disability and Footwear Design Solutions
Abstract
Inclusive design in the footwear industry is critical to addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities, particularly those requiring assistive devices. Despite strides by companies like Nike and Billy Footwear, adaptive footwear options remain limited. This salon session explores opportunities and challenges in adaptive footwear design, showcasing innovative solutions that blend functionality and aesthetics. Drawing on design scholarship and problem-based research, we present insights from IRB-approved studies involving 27 participants, including adaptive footwear projects for individuals using ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) and those with visual impairments. These projects leverage advanced technologies, such as 3D scanning and modular design, to enhance accessibility, comfort, and inclusivity. By integrating creative processes with rigorous research methodologies, this presentation highlights the transformative potential of design scholarship in advancing adaptive footwear, setting a foundation for broader social inclusion and future advancements in inclusive apparel.
