Dialed in: Precision Support and Fit in an Easy On Off Sports Bra Design

Abstract

Currently, available sports bras can be difficult to put on and take off. This problem-based design research aimed to create an easy-to-wear pullover sports bra, informed by interviews with 14 active women. The "Dialed In" design addresses support, modesty, and ease of donning/doffing by using advanced materials and technologies like Bemis laminate fabrics and the BOA Fit System. The author developed a laminate fabric using two layers of lightweight mesh bonded with Bemis Sewfree®, creating a lighter, more durable product with reduced stitching. Peached 4-way stretch fabric with laminate inside the front, wings, and back provided reinforcement and a soft touch. Wide, adjustable, and detachable shoulder straps enhanced support. A high neckline, long wings, and foam cups ensured modesty. The design rethinks donning/doffing by integrating  BOA Fit System dials for a micro-adjustable, precision fit under the bust, inspired by their use in footwear and medical braces.
