Intercultural Mentored Research to Impact Student Success
Abstract
Intercultural learning is essential in the globally interconnected 21st century classroom. This is particularly important for schools serving underrepresented minority (URM) students as multi- and inter-cultural education positively impacts academic success for these students. This paper describes the efforts of a faculty member at a minority-serving institution, to revise ‘white curriculum’ to intercultural curriculum through the development of an intercultural group research study course devised to inform the redesigns of other courses at the institution to further multicultural content across the curriculum, while giving students both mentored research experiences and agency in the intercultural redesigns. URM students who participate in a mentored research project are more likely than those who do not to both persist in their undergraduate studies and pursue graduate education. At the end of the course, student reflections showed how impactful it was to mentor students in intercultural research.
