Who Leads the Global Leather Industry? An In-depth Analysis of the Export Competitiveness of Top Leather-Exporting Nations
Abstract
This study investigates the export competitiveness of the top ten leather-exporting countries, analyzing their performance in raw hides and leather (HS Chapter 41) and articles on leather (HS Chapter 42) from 2018 to 2022. Using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), Market Share (MS), Trade Competitiveness (TC), Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA), and Normalized Revealed Comparative Advantage (NRCA) indices, it highlights the competitive strengths and weaknesses of leading nations. Italy, the United States, and Brazil dominated Chapter 41, while China, Italy, and France led Chapter 42. Findings reveal varied growth patterns, with China achieving the highest CAGR in Chapter 41 and the Netherlands and the USA experiencing declines in Chapter 42. Brazil, Italy, and India demonstrated robust competitiveness, while Vietnam and Thailand faced challenges. This research offers valuable insights for stakeholders, guiding strategic planning and fostering sustainable growth in the global leather sector while informing policy development and investment decisions.
