From Concept to Comfort: Integrating Digital Technologies in User-Centered Designs for Adaptive Clothing

Author
  • Jia Wu (University of Missouri-Columbia)

Abstract

This research abstract highlights the researcher's experiences empowering marginalized users through inclusive apparel innovation and advanced digital technologies. Using FEA and clothing comfort models, the researcher developed various projects such as an adaptive period underwear for people with disabilities, a functional outdoor jacket for wheelchair users, and an adaptive ski jacket for sit skiers. These projects used a user-centered design approach, including comprehensive in-depth interviews, detailed field observations, 3D body scans, and motion sensor applications. This multifaceted approach ensured that the clothing could meet the functional, comfort, and aesthetic needs of people with disabilities.
