Tall Grass Prairie and Harvest Burial Gown

Abstract

Green burials allow for the care of the dead while preserving or restoring the burial environment. This care involves wrapping or clothing the body with biodegradable textiles. This burial gown joins elements of two places, Ukraine and the U.S. tall grass prairie. The rushed weddings and tragic and unjust burials in Ukraine are recognized through the harvest wreath and elements of folk costume. Connection to my region is the application of native grasses and dyestuffs. Place-based resources contribute to a soil-to-soil coloration system, while the folk elements of lacing and shirring contribute to garment coverage, size-ability, and ease of dressing.
