The Evolving Role of Designers in the Digital Transformation Process of the Apparel Industry

Abstract

Digital transformation in the Textile and Apparel industry is receiving a lot of interest in recent research, but the evolving role of the designer in this process needs to e covered. This study aims to explore the role of designers and design departments in the digital transformation process. Building on theories of the value chain, we use qualitative research methods to conduct an exploratory study of a Chinese textile and apparel digital manufacturing company. The findings reveal that during digital transformation, designers need to understand new collaborative processes and have the ability to think in terms of data to integrate to resources provided by the company. It further analyzes the necessity of fashion education to meet the digitalization process of the fashion industry.
