Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, offering new opportunities for creative exploration in apparel design and product development (ADPD). Despite its potential, many students and instructors face challenges integrating AI image generators into coursework. This study aimed to investigate college students’ preferences and perceptions of AI image generators, specifically Gemini and Copilot, for use in creative projects. 61 students completed design tasks and a survey evaluating their learning experiences. Results showed that 80% of students felt AI tools enhanced engagement, expression, and idea generation, particularly for visualizing concepts and overcoming technical skill barriers. Users of AI image generators reported significantly higher satisfaction and perceived outcomes than non-users, although no significant differences were found in learning or support. Students also expressed concerns about authenticity, ethics, and potential misuse of the information. The findings suggest that AI image generators can enrich creativity and concept development in ADPD courses.
