Abstract

There are approximately 15,500 skilled nursing facilities in the U.S. providing care for more than 1.35 million people.  Unfortunately, most of the individuals suffer from a multitude of aging related issues.  To assist this population, I was approached to design a pattern for a "scarf" that could be made and distributed by non-profit organizations across the country to assist these individuals with organizing and keeping safe their personal items as well as providing hand warmth.  Specifically, my goal was to create a garment that not only meets the needs of storage and hand warmth, but also to provide a garment that was so much more than a scarf.  Considering the multitude of design criteria/restrictions in mind for this specific population, the ideation of a shawl apron began.  The finished customizable garment and pattern provides for a highly functional garment that can be completed by novice sewers at a reasonable cost.
