Assessing the Impacts of Manure Timing and Cover Cropping Techniques on Crop Yield and Drainage Water Quality

Abstract
High-yielding Midwest U.S. corn and soybean production systems face persistent challenges related to nitrate loss through subsurface drainage, phosphorus transport, and long-term soil health. In Iowa, subsurface drainage accelerates nitrate movement to streams and drinking water supplies, reinforcing the importance of in-field nutrient and water management strategies. The Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (INRS) targets statewide reductions of 41% for nitrogen and 29% for phosphorus, emphasizing the need for practices that are both environmentally effective and agronomically viable.
