Static Water Level Monitoring of the Devonian Aquifer

Abstract

Devonian rocks in North-Central Iowa form three major aquifers that are termed the “lower”, “middle”, and “upper” aquifers. The Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) constructed a three piezometer wellnest at the ISU NE Research Farm that is completed in the Devonian Cedar Valley Group. NP1 is completed in the Bassett Member of the Little Cedar Formation (190 feet deep; middle aquifer); NP2 is completed in the Eagle Center Member (130 feet deep; upper aquifer); and NP3 is completed in the Hinkle Member (110 feet deep; upper aquifer). The Chickasaw Shale Member, a regional confining unit, separates NP1 from the other wells. In 2022, the IGS began monitoring these piezometers to improve understanding of spatial and temporal patterns of groundwater hydrology in the Devonian aquifers in the region. Documenting any pattern(s) that suggest a decline in water levels that may affect long-term availability of water in the aquifers is a monitoring priority.
