Subsidence Assessment and Recharge of the NERF Denitrifying Bioreactor

Abstract
Denitrifying bioreactors, also known as woodchip bioreactors or just “bioreactors,” clean nitrate from drainage water. The bioreactor at the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm (NERF) has one of the longest monitoring records of any bioreactor in the world, dating from 2009 nearly continuously for 15 years. In 2024, this bioreactor provided an opportunity to assess long-term subsidence of the bioreactor surface as well as a chance to document the process of a bioreactor “recharge” (that is, woodchip replacement).
