The FBI and the FOIA: Problems of Access and Destruction
Abstract
This article will address an issue of common concern to historians and archivists—namely, how to insure that records pertaining to the recent past will be preserved and accessioned into archival custody, and particularly as this relates to the opportunities provided under provisions of the Freedom of Information Act of 1966 (as amended in 1974). It will survey the ways in which the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) extends scholarly research and accessioning bases and will discuss the problems attendant to the effective use of the FOIA. My remarks will be confined to the accessioning and preservation of the records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
