History Education Outreach Programs for Adults: A Missed Opportunity for Archivists?

Abstract

Because the archives and history professions are closely related, it is logical that archivists create history education outreach programs and services. Archivists provide educators with access to primary sources and assist teachers in utilizing these sources in their classrooms to foster critical thinking and historical reasoning skills in students. In recent years, archivists have heeded the call to serve teachers, K-12 students, and undergraduates, in addition to academic historians and graduate students. Most, however, have missed a valuable opportunity to reach out to the community at large with education programs similar to services they may already provide to teachers and students. This article presents an argument for history and archival education programs directed at adult users.
