Women Archivists in the Federal Government: A Glass Ceiling?
Abstract
The status of female federal archivists in 1992 shows considerable improvement over their status in 1974. Nevertheless, their numbers and representation in mid- and upper-level positions remain lower than that of male federal archivists. The lower numbers furthermore constitute a pipeline problem: Fewer women than men are in position for promotion to the highest levels. This study finds that years of government service and education, two of the most important factors in career advancement, account for only a small portion of the disparity between men and women archivists. Any glass ceiling that exists, therefore, must depend on other factors.
