The Importance of Being Diverse: The Archival Profession and Minority Recruitment

Author
  • Kathryn M. Neal (University of Iowa)

Abstract

Recent projections indicate that the American work force will become increasingly pluralistic during the 21st century. What implications do these changing demographics have for the archival profession? Regardless of racial background, individuals have joined the profession in small numbers. The field remains largely racially homogenous, however, despite some past and current efforts to remedy the situation. The author presents reasons why the issue of diversity demands archivists' concern, explores the reasons behind the shortage of minorities in the profession, and suggests possible means by which to encourage more people of color to enter.
