Beyond USMARC AMC: The Context of a Data Exchange Format
Abstract
Archivists' discussions about use of the USMARC AMC format so far have failed adequately to address goals and system design and implementation issues. The article focuses on one commonly articulated goal, improved end-user access to archival collections. It examines the issues of data quantity, data quality, and user-system interfaces and concludes that unresolved problems in all three areas present significant obstacles to end-user access to archival collections via current bibliographic descriptive networks.
