Recognition of pathogen associated molecular patterns by Toll-like receptors (TLR) increases 1α-hydroxylase expression in bovine macrophages. This results in increased conversion of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) to 1,25- dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) in bovine macrophages. Production of 1,25(OH)2D3 in bovine macrophages indicates that 1,25(OH)2D3 may be involved in modulating the bovine immune response.
