Abstract

Abstract for Online Poster: This project is for the purpose of floating a balloon. The valve will open when commanded, allowing helium to escape the balloon. The helium will keep escaping until commanded to close, which in turn will allow the balloon to achieve neutral buoyancy. Allowing the balloon to float will prove critical for the 2023-2024 Eclipse. When the balloon floats the cameras will be able to capture more of the zone of totality and have a cleaner live stream.  The balloon floating will also help the collection of gravity wave data more effectively. The design has been through multiple iterations and is currently being worked on. The most current update relies on short distance radios to communicate to a servo to move to an open position. When the servo turns it pushes a push rod into a flap. The flap is a chamfered circular lid that sits on foam to guarantee a seal. The flap moves up and allows helium to escape.
