Residual Seismic Capacity of UHPC Columns After Fire Exposure

Abstract

The seismic behavior of UHPC columns after fire exposure was experimentally investigated. The experimental program contained six concrete column specimens reinforced with high-strength reinforcing bars, including two normal-strength concrete (NSC) columns, two high-strength concrete (HSC) columns, and two UHPC columns. For each type of the columns, one column was subjected to a 2-hour fire exposure according to the standard heating condition while the rest of the columns were considered as control specimens without exposure to fire. To investigate the fire effect on the seismic performance, all column specimens were subjected to lateral displacement reversals with a constant axial load. The test results show that for the NSC and HSC columns, the lateral strengths after fire exposure were reduced by 7.8% and 13%, respectively. Moreover, the effective stiffnesses degraded by 48% and 55%, respectively. While the 2-hour fire exposure had relatively minor effect on the lateral strength of the concrete columns, it considerably reduced the stiffness of the columns regardless of the type of concrete materials. The seismic capacity of the UHPC column after fire exposure was discussed extensively in terms of the damage pattern due to fire exposure, residual strength and stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, and failure mode.
