Deconstructed Roses
Abstract
The goal of this design was to use leftover alligator hide and cowhide waste creativley while drawing design inspiration from a notable American deisgner. Geoffrey Beene. This design increases the sustainability and future potential uses of small leather scrap ranging in size from 1/4" to 2" which normally would be discarded. Rose appliques were created with the alligator hide showcasing the different scale pattern variations. For the three-dimensional shoulder detail, both alligator and cowhide leather scraps were wet molded to create petal-like shapes. Additionally, the design drew inspiration from Geoffrey Beene by combining linen and leather, two fabrics that normally would not be used together. Future work should invesitgate further creative uses for smaller pieces of alligator hides that connot be used in larger projects to increase the sustainability of leather scraps.
