Abstract

High visibility (HI-VIS) apparel is designed to visually signal the presence of a user to reduce the risk of accidents in hazardous environments and weather conditions. Among available products, HI-VIS vests are the most widely used in occupational and recreational activities due to their safety and wearability. However, HI-VIS vests lack versatility and require frequent replacement, which contribute to overconsumption and increased textile waste generation. Transformability, a design strategy aimed at increasing user wearability and delaying product disposal, can address these challenges. Hence, the purpose of this design was to develop a HI-VIS transformable product using HI-VIS vest waste to increase product longevity and decrease overconsumption. The design consists of a HI-VIS jacket with two detachable components, the hood and sleeves. When these components are detached, the jacket transforms into a vest and the hood transforms into a hand or waist bag for sleeve storage.
